The DLG4 SHINE Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by DLG4-related Synaptopathy and accelerating research to find a treatment for our loved ones. Our community of patients, families, friends and supporters is what drives our efforts. Grassroots fundraising is what makes research, treatments, and hope a reality. The DLG4 SHINE Foundation is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a tax-exempt charitable organization; this tax exempt status is crucial for our ability to carry out our mission. In order to preserve this status, it is essential that you comply with the various IRS regulations regarding nonprofit fundraising activities. Below are some general guidelines:

Because DLG4 SHINE Foundation is not hosting your event, it is considered a third-party event. For this reason, you will not be able to use the Foundation’s IRS 501(c)(3) charitable classification, federal tax ID number or tax-exempt certificate. However, if you provide name and address, or email address, for donors or sponsors, DLG4 SHINE Foundation will send them a personal thank you from the Foundation, which will serve as a receipt.
The event organizer may not set up a temporary bank account in DLG4 SHINE Foundation’s name, as this is illegal.
The event organizer may not keep any portion of the proceeds (beyond real expenses) as profit or compensation.
Donors must be informed that the tax deductible amount of a donation is only the amount that is over and above the value of any goods or services received in exchange for the donation. For example, if a participant pays $200 to participate in a golf outing, and the value of the outing is $50, the donation amount is $150. If a donor pays less than the value of an item, then they will not receive a tax deduction.
If goods are sold to raise money as part of a fundraising event, it must be made clear to the event participants what percentage of the sale price benefits DLG4 SHINE Foundation.

We are humbled by your donations received in memory of a loved one. These legacy donations have a lasting impact on improving the quality of life for people with DLG4 SHINE. If you would like to suggest donation in lieu of flowers, the following language can be used in an obituary: Donations can be made in memory of (Name) by visiting www.dlg4shinefoundation.org. Donations made will advance research to find treatments for DLG4 SHINE. Online donations are most secure and efficient for you. Alternatively, checks can be made to: DLG4 SHINE Foundation, P.O. Give Lively allows our supporters to create personalized fundraising pages to fundraise directly for the DLG4 SHINE foundation. 100% of donations go directly to the Foundation. Remind friends and family to check their employer’s charitable gift matching program. Some companies match and donate 100% of the employees charitable contribution.

Social Media/Online Fundraising

Rally your friends & family on Facebook to support the DLG4 SHINE Foundation in celebration of your special day (Birthday, Anniversary etc). Setting up a fundraiser takes just minutes through our foundation Facebook page. Invite people from your friends list to join your fundraiser. This will send them a notification about your fundraiser. Personalize your message. When you create a fundraiser, Facebook will automatically give you a stock message about our organization. You have the ability to personalize the message and make it your own. Personalizing your fundraiser will help it to stand out from others on Facebook. Post updates in your Fundraiser periodically. Every time you post, the fundraiser will appear fresh in the newsfeed again. Thank your donors individually. You can also add our donate button on Facebook to any post.

Participate in a Marathon

Put your favourite activity to good use! If you are skilled enough to run or bike ride in marathons, enter one as a fundraiser and get your running friends and your local community to rally around you. DLG4 SHINE is lucky enough to have benefited multiple times of the incredible running talents and motivation of one dedicated Mom who ran half and full marathons pushing her DLG4 SHINE son and raised over $50,000 overall for the foundation.

Run/Walk

Host a run/walk in your neighborhood with you friends and family to raise awareness and fundraise for DLG4 SHINE Foundation. Your race participants complete the race whenever and wherever they like, choosing to run on a treadmill, in their neighborhood, or up a mountain trail. Use an app like JustMove or a site such as https://runsignup.com/ to host. Attached is a picture of two families who fundraised over $6,000 for our foundation.

Set up a Lemonade Stand

A lemonade stand This is a popular American idea – it’s a great way of getting some money, and having a learning experience for the kids – and having fun too! Whether it's in your neighborhood, at your Church or at the kid's soccer or baseball games, long summer days are ideal for this! Check out the picture to see what one DLG4 SHINE family did! They got a local company to donate a cool sign and raised over a $1,000 hosting a lemonade stand for DLG4 SHINE Foundation.

Silent Auction or Virtual Yard Sale

Ask your network of family and friends if they have any valuable items, services or experiences they would be willing to donate. Clean out your closet and garage for items to be auctioned. Use a website such as www.32auctions.com to host a silent auction or simply throw a party in your yard and direct donations to our website with a QR code.
